‘In The Making Since A Hundred of Years – Access Statement

Statement – Wheelchair Access for 45 Hilton St, Northern Quarter, Manchester

Venture Arts is very happy to be presenting the work of Leslie Thompson at 45 Hilton Street. We are delighted to be offered the space during A Modest Show which takes place across Manchester alongside The British Art Show 9 in 2022. The national profiling opportunities this provides for the artist and his work is incredibly important for him and his career.

When we took the space and booked this exhibition, we did so, with a first priority to make it accessible for wheelchair users. We therefore spent two months exploring all potential options for wheelchair access for this exhibition but were frustratingly unable to find a workable solution that could be put in place in time. The step heights at the front and rear of the building and limited public pavement access make a safe and temporary solution impossible, whilst the Grade II listed building status means that long-term adaptations will be prolonged and a challenge to implement. We sincerely apologise for these limitations.

An alternative option for audiences who are wheelchair users is therefore provided by way of this online video tour, which we hope offers a way for people to experience the work in the exhibition.

Due to all art venues in the city being fully programmed for the British Art Show, we were unable to source an alternative wheelchair accessible space, leaving us with little option but to either find an adjustment or to pull out of the show to the detriment of the artist.
