Work by Venture Arts artist Emelia Hewitt features in Out Here at Castlefield Gallery, a group exhibition exploring how artists engage with nature, ecology and the more-than-human world.

Out Here brings together artists Ashleigh Beattie, Shezad Dawood, Emelia Hewitt, Steve Sutton, Adam Rawlinson and Keziah Thomas-Mellor, exploring our relationship with the natural world through drawing, film, painting, performance, photography, printmaking, sculpture and site-specific work.

The artists’ practices examine the interaction between human and non-human ecologies, often shaped by time spent outdoors or through working directly with natural materials.

Among the artists featured is Venture Arts studio artist Emelia Hewitt, whose practice combines photography with textiles and illustration. Emelia is particularly interested in the history of photography, from its role documenting everyday life in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to its early connections with scientific attempts to observe and categorise the natural world.

Her recent work experiments with cameraless photographic processes such as cyanotypes, anthotypes and chlorophyll printing, alongside more sustainable photographic methods using natural ingredients and fewer chemicals.

Emelia Hewitt’s practice combines photography, textiles and illustration, using intricate digital and analogue techniques to manipulate images, narratives and histories. Her work explores photography’s relationship with everyday life, as well as its early connections with science and the categorisation of the natural world.
