The Meeting Place of Unveiled Worlds
Venture Arts artist, Andrew Johnstone, has been selected to be part of this exciting new exhibition in Japan, curated by Jennifer Gilbert of Jennifer Lauren Gallery.
The Meeting Place of Unveiled Worlds brings together eleven remarkable artists from across the UK, showcasing a bold mix of emerging and established voices. The exhibition spans two rooms, including work by two celebrated Art Brut figures, Madge Gill and Scottie Wilson. Though both artists are no longer with us, their influence lives on—Gill’s work recently featured in the 2024 Venice Biennale.
We’re thrilled to see the inclusion of the work of Andrew Johnstone, a long standing Venture Arts artist. His love of animals shines through in his detailed illustrations and ceramics, full of life and personality. His work adds a playful, narrative thread to the exhibition’s monochrome room.
This first room focuses on the power of black and white. Nigel Kingsbury, Tirzah Mileham and Madge Gill explore the female form through expressive mark-making. Cathy Ward, Cara Macwilliam and Terence Wilde offer ethereal, organic shapes—Macwilliam and Wilde working sculpturally in clay. Johnstone’s animal worlds sit alongside them, bringing their own rich rhythm and charm.
In the second room, colour bursts forth. Jesse James Nagel’s surreal compositions are packed with vivid energy, while Cameron Morgan’s ceramic works celebrate his love of film. Valerie Potter’s vibrant cross-stitch weaves together people, plants, animals and imagined gods. Scottie Wilson’s dreamlike forms, in more muted tones, explore symbolic worlds of nature, conflict and spirit.
This is an exhibition where difference is celebrated, imagination runs free, and every work invites a closer look.
